Some History of Crewkerne Probus Club
8 March 1977 – A meeting was arranged by Crewkerne Rotary Club at The Red Lion to explore the possibility of a Probus Club being formed in Crewkerne. A provisional Committee was formed.
18 April 1977 – At the first Committee meeting provisional officers were appointed and rules drafted. An entrance fee of £1 and an annual subscription of £2.50 were set. Letters were sent to people who might be interested.
2 May 1977 – A meeting was held at the Day Centre to form Crewkerne Probus Club officially. The Chairman, Secretary and Treasurer were confirmed and are depicted in the photo below (from left to right: Secretary Bill Adams, Chairman Malcolm Blair and Treasurer Fred Poole).
25 May 1977 – The first monthly luncheon was held at The George Hotel. The Chairman of Crewkerne Rotary Club was a guest. Fifteen members were present. The meal cost £2.50 per head.
7 December 1977 – A Ladies Night, held at The George Hotel, was the clubs first function. Tickets cost £10 per couple. This included sherry and wines!
26 April 2002 – The Club marked its 25th Anniversary with a dinner at The Windwhistle Inn. Furthermore it also celebrated the 100th birthday of Club member and Past President Fred Poole.
Venues for Monthly Luncheon Meetings have included The George Hotel, The White Lion Carvery, The Queen’s Hotel, Cricket St Thomas, Chedington Golf Club and The Windwhistle Inn.
1998 – The fine wooden Club Honours Board was made by member John Stoodley.
1981 – The Club President’s ribbon was donated anonymously by a member “as a thank you for the friendship and goodwill received in Probus”.
